John was struck while performing his duties protecting children in Merrick on February 26,2026. Sadly, John has passed away from his injuries.
Crossing Guards serve our communities with courage and dedication. They dedicate themselves to standing in the roadway to protect our children and residents. John has answered that call of service always with a smile and a kind word. His commitment will never be forgotten.
God Bless John and his family at this very difficult time.
May he rest in eternal peace.

The crossing guards are out there no matter the weather, they have to have eyes in the back of their heads and be able to respond sometimes with amazing trigger like responses to potential danger. The crossing guard at Old Mill Road and Richard Avenue in North Merrick is one of the most dedicated, kind and compassionate guards I have ever met. (She also has shoveled the snow at times to make a path to the street at her corner) I’m sure Mr Miro was of the same caliber. My sincere sympathies to his family; may he rest in peace.
