My son, Derek, was born with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) ten years ago. It’s like ALS for children. As a retired NYPD detective I have always been tied to NY because of our insurance, but the department has changed it where we can move to any state now and be medically covered. We are trying to relocate to another state to give him and his brother Alex a better life. More importantly we can be together as a family. However, we are heavily in debt because of all the bills that we have accumulated. The move has many moving parts with, all his machines and medications. Medicaid has a waiting period of up to 8 months to a year in the new state. The money will go to bills accumulated in the last ten years and modifying the new home to make it more practical for Derek. Thank you.
